Salt Lake City to Washington D.C.

What and adventure...and five months preggers too! Traveling across the country pregnant wasn't too fun but a red eye flight made it even worse! I was so worn out when I arrived in D.C.

I met my sister, brother in law and cute nephew for lunch and then rushed off for the campus tour of Georgetown University -I am kinda nerdy and love tours. I think I get this from being a tour guide myself. When I was 20 years old I was an intern for the curators office of the U.S. Supreme Court Building. I gave tours and lectures for a summer and fell in love with history, architecture, and Washington D.C.

Have you seen the TLC show DC Cupcakes? Parenting Mom Congress was held in at Georgetown University and the adorable cupcake shop--Georgetown Cupcakes is featured on the network TLC is located a hop skip and a jump off campus. The line looked 50 people deep when we drove by, we were fortunate enough to have ours delivered to the conference!

I am the Utah Delegate for the 2011 Mom Congress! I will be going to Washington D.C. in April to learn and share with 50 other Moms who are fighting for education in our communities. Very exciting! Thanks Parenting Magazine for this opportunity!

Being a mother who is excited about fighting for better schools, I am eager to bring women, mothers and our communities together!

Growing up in a household of five children I learned firsthand from my mother and grandmother the importance of quality education and giving back to our schools. Both of these women are professional educators and have lived the good and the bad within our schools systems. Having this background and now a mother of two I am inspired to live my life by making a difference, not only for my own children but for the children of my community. I believe that if we nurture struggling children we will foster positive growth to successful adults.

I have been actively involved leading advocacy efforts for State funding for our Utah’s Optional All Day kindergarten programs for our Title I schools, I have led lobbying efforts for additional funding for our Head Start preschool programs and have worked with lawmakers on legislation for healthy drinks and snacks in our schools. At our local elementary I have been on numerous field trips, served as a group reading specialist and am always excited to volunteer in the classroom when help is needed. Fortunately, in our neighborhood volunteers are easy to come by and there are many mothers who are waiting to help out in our classrooms.

Having a strong passion for education has led me to work professionally every day with fundraising efforts encouraging members of our community to give back. Through these efforts dollars are granted to two initiatives, Community Learning Centers and Welcome Centers these are located in schools, nontraditional schools, and community centers. These are initiatives that are helping many struggling families succeed.

I look forward to representing my community next month and learning from our nations best!

So I have not even looked at my blog for a few months now. I have been busy with other things. I could tell you all the things I have been up to.
1. I am a mommy.
2. I do work full time for United Way of Salt Lake.
3. My job is very busy and I manage a group of 320 donors. You can see my blog for YL here.
4. My hubby works out of town ALOT, so I manage our entire household. (He brings in the big bucks.)
5. I have to admit...facebook has taken the place of the blog. But I am not gone yet. It's all those email friend requests.
6. I have become addicted to the show Lost, so the past three months all my late night free time has gone into watching every episode from the beginning of the first season. I started this back in December and now I am all caught up. It is an intense show!
7. The only reason I have time to post today is because my two year old Tatum is sick with the flu. I have been on the computer for work way to much today and thought if I was really taking a sick day from work I should do something for myself. Isn't that what sick days are for? Plus Tatum is watching Dora the explorer and I don't think I can sit through another episode of that show.

I'm Back

Ok so if I have any readers out there I must apologize for my hiatus. I have been swamped with work and motherhood. Two things I really do enjoy! Today is a Saturday and I had a hair appointment. I have been going to the same hairdresser for almost three years now. Her name is Bandy Gray and I really enjoy seeing her every six to eight weeks. I started seeing her when I was preggers with Tatum. At that time I had made the mistake of dying my hair brown (with another hair dresser) and I was on the lookout for someone to nurse my hair back to blond. She did this gracefully and now I have been blond for two years.

This past week we had our first snow storm for the year and I failed to shut off my sprinkler water! So I hope my pipes didn't break with the frost. It warmed up a few days later so then I managed to find the big key thing and pry off the cap. So if any of you saw me in my front yard bent over searching in the grass that was what I was doing. Now I have a backyard full of leaves to bag. Anyone want some?

Some of you may not know what I do for Untied Way of Salt Lake, I am the Young Leaders Director. Young Leaders are a dynamic group of young community and business leaders who use their time, talent, and resources to effect lasting change in our community. Membership is open to individuals and couples who are 45 years of age or younger and who invest $1,000 or more annually in United Way of Salt Lake.

Young Leaders offers multiple avenues to become further engaged in our community through volunteer projects, advocacy, personal and professional development opportunities, and social and networking events. We also present our members the opportunity to learn from leaders in our community through our Lunch with a Leader Series. Young Leaders is a fun and fulfilling way to get involved alongside others who share a common commitment to improving our community.

Our next event is our Summer Social that will be held right before the Twilight Series Concert at the Gallivan Center. The purpose of this event is to invite people to come and find out more about Young Leaders. Wells Fargo is fully sponsoring this event so there is no charge to you.

If you cannot attend this event I would welcome the opportunity to talk with you about your interest in our community and how you can become involved with United Way of Salt Lake and or through Young Leaders.

Life with the Harrison family has been very busy! We want to make the most of the warm weather this year. We went to Park City, Utah with my sister Allison and her family. We also took a quick trip to Disneyland. So far our kids are having a great summer!

My Dad and Izzie,

Sunday morning two weeks ago I received a call from my mother.

She was calm and collected but wanted to let me know she was at the hospital waiting for my dad to have a MRI. He had something happen in the middle of the night where he felt a large jolt and warm tingle go through his body. He ended up falling back to sleep and when he woke up in the morning, he felt very confused. My mom explained that he came in and asked her where his shaving kit was? She went into the bathroom to help him look for it and it was on the bathroom counter. He then came in a little later and asked her to help him find his toothbrush and he was holding it in his hand. He knew something wasn't right and kept saying he was so confused. She drove him to the hospital. After several tests and a few hours later it was determined he suffered a Stroke.

He has been told by Doctors that he should be able to get back everything he has lost. Now that time has gone by we have seen great progress. So now he seems back to normal.

From the title of my post I will tell you all that we would not be the same without him. This has been a very upsetting situation for our family and we all are so happy things are OK. Life is so precious so don't sweat the small stuff.

His boss kept calling into the office one day and like the fifth time he did he apologized for calling so much and I told him that next time he should have Tate call me and so then Tate called me a few days later and said "hey I hear you wanted me to call you". I tried to deny it but Tate knew exactly what I had said. We talked for over an hour and then I asked him if he was going to take me out. he he (I could tell he liked me)
Who proposed? Tate of Course! It did take him 2years and 3 months but I was waiting.
Who has more siblings? We both have four. We both are middle children of five.
Who wears the pants? Tate....but I wear them when he is gone and then let him have them back when he's home.

While moving out of one space to another at work we came across a very LARGE t-shirt. The new tag line for United Way is "Live United" and these two have embraced its true meaning. I love the people I work with!

On January 23 we were invited to Hayden's School for his Spotlight Presentation. The class sang to him as he stood in the middle of the rug. Then we were able to answer some questions about him. Here are some of those questions:

What are your favorite things? cherries, raspberries and soda pop

What is your favorite animal? sharks, snakes and bugs

What are you best at? Math!

What makes Hayden special? he is always so happy to play with friends and loves to play with his little sister.

To top it all off Hayden was Student of the Day! This means he is the line leader and gets to help the teachers with any special assignments. (He loves being Student of the Day.) I am so glad we put him in this school he loves to get there early so he has more time to play before the school hours start. He even wants to stay for craft every day and craft is done after 4:30 pm everday! He loves to be at school and for that it makes me feel like I am "Mother of the Day"!

Today is my sister Amanda's birthday! She is twenty seven, woo hoo! As you can see from her blog she is very sarcastic and loves to make fun. But what her blog may not tell you is that she has a huge heart. Amanda has always been called loud and that she can be, but loud is what makes all of her good qualities SHOUT. For example she is loud when we see her....I love how she is so excited to see my kids and that my kids are so excited to see her.

She and I have spent many a day talking on the phone when I lived out of state. I always enjoyed yacking it up with her. Growing up she was a great playmate and we were always buddies on our family vacations. I am three years older than she is but she has always been tall. Out of all my siblings we look the most alike. Although she grew taller than me when she was like seven! I love you Manda and Happy Birthday! May this year be the best yet!

Today is extra special because my son Hayden is six, yes they share the same b-day!

it has been so great to have tate home all week! he has taken on his daddy role and just let me take a break. i honestly can't remember the last time he has been home for an entire week. he travels so much when he comes home he really tries to help out. i haven't had to take the kids to school and daycare or even make hayden's lunch. i just wake up and only have to worry about myself. it has been nice, but really weird at the same time. i almost feel like i'm forgetting something everyday i leave the house. on top of it all tate has put in a new microwave, kitchen light and built a wall in the basement for a guestroom and he was on snow blow duty for the big storm we just had!
this past weekend we took my sister emily and her husband miles to the utah vs. byu game and watched the utes loose! then we went and saw "i am legend" with will smith. it is scary but good. (take someone you can hold to.) then we topped off the night with some good eats at the porcupine. yummy ,yummy. miles used to work there so we had the royal treatment.

What have I been up to you ask? Well the holidays were busy of course. I hosted a small party with my college friends you can see some pics here at my friend Natalie's blog. We had all the fabulous family parties as usual and then we traveled down to Vegas again for he New Year. Work is still very busy.

oh and i went to see Juno with some lady friends and it is a must see! very funny.

"guest relations informational request"

So my friend Ann who I met when living in Colorado gave me a "guest relations informational request" (aka Tag) and I started to fill it out and realized how much i hated sharing any of this information. All the questions were about high school and people I remember from high school. You can see her questionnaire here. I actually live really close to my high school and see people I know all the time. One thing that is very nice about living out of this state is that you don't have to see any of those people ever again. But sadly there are many people I do see and really don't care to. I do also have to say that some of those people from high school that I do see are really just regular people who were very insecure back at the age of 16, 17, and 18. It is nice to live so close to home but living away dose has it's advantage and this is one of those.

So Hayden's costume this year was a Skeleton then after wearing it all day at school he wanted to be something else. I think it was a little warm. Luckily his costume from 2005 still fit him so when we went trick-or-treating he put on the Turtle costume. Don't ask me how this looks any cooler.......he sure looks happy:).

Tatum was a Love Bug and she loved getting candy in her little pumpkin purse. Halloween is so much fun with kids.

i can honestly admit that I have nothing to hide about my last visit to sin city. my dad taught tate how to play craps so now he is all over throwin dice. he knows how to walk away a winner. unfortunately i am not a winner :(. tate is there working on a project called Hyatt Place. you can see what it will look like here. we ate yummy food shopped, and walked, and walked, and walked. we went to two shows "Mamma Mia" at Mandalay Bay, and "O" -Cirque du Soleil at the Bellagio. we also attended the the Bodies the Exhibition at the Tropicana. the entertainment was great and having time alone with tate was long awaited. my sister watched my kids and I am so lucky i have great family around to help me.

Seven Years Ago Today

Seven years ago Tate and I took the plunge and married one another. Tate was 27 and I was only 23! We dated for two years and then started the next chapter of our lives as a married couple.

Here is a recap on each year we've been married.....

One: colorado, first pregnancy, new friends

Two: new baby, wyoming and then back to colorado

Three: new parents, new jobs and learning to get through hard stuff

Four: back to utah, back to work, and back to my parents house

Five: work, hard work, and more work

Are you sitting down....ok so last Wednesday I put my five year old on a flight to Arizona all by himself! My child who has no fear was happy to leave me at the gate. When it was time for him to board his plane I started to panic inside and all that came out of my mouth was "Hayden I'll be right here." "ok mom" he said as he walked up the ramp with the other unaccompanied minor who was a girl a few years older than him. Tate wanted to take him to a Diamond Back Baseball game. Tate will drive home with him tomorrow and I am so excited to see both of them!

tate has been working back east so when he flies home to visit he will leave his vehicle back there. we have a little spare car we drive around that hayden likes to call the subaruge. we use it when tate comes in town but it has one problem.....no air conditioning! with the 95+ degree weather we've been having the car heats up pretty quick. so this week while tate has been home i have been driving the subaruge. he will take the kids so i don'thave to worry about dropping them off at the babysitters so i let him take my car that is fully equipped with a/c. my ride to work is not to bad but the ride home is when i swelter! while driving in the heat i am reminded of how lucky i am to have a car with a/c. i appreciate my car so much more!

my husband tate and i have celebrated over nine birthdays with one another. in that time we managed to get married, live in three states, (utah, colorado, & wyoming) move eight different times and have the two cutest kids ever! last week tate had another birthday he wasn't here to celebrate so we will have to make up for it when he comes home. happy birthday tate!

while writing this post i pondered the thought that we have had nine different cars and with all of these cars i have great memories with tate. here are the cars we have used in our journey together.

1962 Bug: tate let me drive her while we were dating, i remember having to tow her from one home to the next, we better get this darling thing running again one day

1990 Jetta: the notorious b.i.g., big beautiful south, gangsta lean, what a P.O.S...... we passed this piece on in 2000 to tate's little bro and i think it died soon after that

1991 Subaru, Loyale: the red barron, this car was very loyal....we do miss you, mirror lake we decided we were going to get married :) the marathon trip to arizona and san diego, passed this good girl onto someone in 2002 in colorado

1992 Subaru, Legacy: tate impressed me with his mechanic skills when he changed the starter while the car sat in the pay lot at the student union! this was the last car my parents helped me with, i passed her on in 2000 to my little sister when I purchased the volvo 850

1993 Volvo, 850: my first car of my own! we took this car to arizona, colorado and wyoming, we had some great times in the "night rider" after putting well over 200,000 miles on her she has been passed on to our babysitter this year

1998 GMC, Sierra: the "silver bullet"traveled all over colorado. we took some great road trips in this vehicle to yellowstone, arizona, and back and forth from utah to colorado. we let her go to tates bro after we picked up the ford 350

2002 Ford 350 Superduty Crew cab: this has been a great vehicle we still have it and tate drives it all over the country. he is currently in connecticut and headed for pennsylvania this week. i like to call it "the machine" the power behind this engine is incredible. the worst part of the truck is the price at the pump!!!! i never imagined having to buy diesel and spending over $100 every time you fill up!

1993 Subaru, Loyale: another subaru you ask? yes we like them and tate is a wiz at fixing them he resurrected this one from the dead. we use her as a spare car when tate flies home. she has been back on the road just this year.

2001 Volvo, V70 XC: we just brought her into the family this past march. i found her and had to have her. the price was right and she seats seven. we took her on a trip to california and arizona this past spring. i love her and hope she is around for a while.

tate i am so glad we have decided to travel together in the road trip we call life. I wish you many new adventures in the years to come!

Tatum turned one last Saturday. I am so glad we have her in our life. She brings us so much joy. When people ask how my baby is doing I get this smile on my face and think of how sweet she is. Last week she started to use her hands to tell me she wants something. If she wants someone to pick her up she will reach her arms out and wave her fingers to motion you over. It is so cute. she loves her brother and always wants to be where he is. She also loves to swim. You can see a picture of her swimming on her birthday Here. My favorite things about Tatum:

1-Kicks her legs with joy when I pick her up

2-Love pats when she gives me a hug

3-Her cute teeth when she smiles

4-Bops to any music she hears

5-Always happy to see me

6-Loves her brother

9-Takes wonderful naps, and still goes to bed early

10-She is a girl and I never thought I would enjoy having a girl so much!

When growing up I never appreciated my father for the man that he is. As a child your view of your parents can be very different than what they when you are older with your own kids. I look back at how afraid I was of my dad and how intimidated I was by him. He still dose intimidate me to some degree but now I regret feeling the way I did.
Now I know his intentions with the five of us were only good. He wanted good things for us all and he still wants to see us succeed. After being married to someone that comes from a broken home I respect my father even more. He is the Rock of our family.

Here we are at the Zoo a few weeks ago. We went late on a Friday afternoon to see the Ghost of the Bayou, a white alligator with blue eyes. Legends say if they look at you in the eyes you will have good luck! I have pictures of myself on this slide as a youngster.

Daddy and his little princess. Here is a picture of Tate and Tatum at a wedding reception for his brother Tanner. Tatum is looking a bit worn out! You can see her little purple cast on her arm.

They are both so cute!

This is a week later and the purple cast slipped off so we had to have it replaced. They put it up above the elbow so it wouldn't slide off again.

Mother's Day

Here is a picture of my Tatum on Mother's Day. She slipped off the bed the day before and landed on her arm, this fractured it and she has been in a cast/splint. She will have it on for three weeks. My niece Annie is feeding her. She loves the cousins.

Bucking Bronco

Bucking Bronco is a game my dad will play with his grandkids. He will hold onto the swing chains and buck them around. He will also swing them until they are high in the sky. High Sky is what I remember saying to my dad gowing up. We all love it!

This is a picture of my kiddo's on a Sunday May 20th. We were over at my parents house to say hello. It is very rare that we don't go over on Sunday to say hello and have some yummy Sunday Dinner. This is Tatum's first outdoor swing ride. She loved it. As she swayed in the air she giggled and giggled. What a little angel I have. Hayden is posing for the picture too. He just loves his little sister.

Can I tell you someTing?

My five year old is always asking me..... "Can I tell you someTing?” He pronounces the word something= some-Ting. He then will proceed to tell me a wonderful story about his day or he will try to talk me into letting him watch another show on TV. Usually he wants to tell me about a new toy he has seen during a commercial break. The latest is someTing Spiderman or those crazy Blendy pens!

I am so glad he wants to tell me someTing.

Getting My Feet Wet
